GEERP bags World Bank’s Green Award
Gujarat Emergency Earthquake Reconstruction Programme (GEERP) implemented by GSDMA was awarded the prestigious “Green Awards of the World Bank”. The Green Awards is given by the World Bank for promotion and maintenance of environmental concerns in the implementation of the projects funded by the World Bank. The award was instituted in the year 2001 for encouraging environmental safeguards mechanisms of projects and implementing them. Every year two or three projects out of a large number of projects implemented all over the world are selected for this prestigious award.
GEERP tried to have minimal adverse environmental impacts and whenever any negative impact was envisaged, suitable mitigation measures and monitoring strategy was framed to control the impact. The earthquake that hit Gujarat on 26th January 2001 had a number of environmental impacts, both direct and indirect. These impacts have been assessed in order to identify measures that could be considered during the reconstruction effort as part of the broader disaster management framework and strategy.
